10th Science Festival for Students with Disabilities

Science Festival for Students with Disabilities was held on September 22 at the Daegu Institute of Science Education. Around 100 students and teachers were invited to the festival and various science activities were given to them.

Science magic show was the first. Students from Dongchon Middle School performed a short drama with simple magic. Although there was a mistake, but students enjoyed it.

Setting for science magic show

One of DU graduate students showed more science magic with the help of lady from Busan Amenity Science Association. He showed a couple of magics, and compared the techniques of usual magic like optical illusion and those of scientific magic like chemical reactions.

After that, science drama entitled "Missing dolls" was followed. This was written by a undergraduate student majoring physics education. She combined concept of "refraction of light", "principles of leverage", and "vibration of a spring" to the main storyline, in which a rascal took all the dolls away from the world, and a girl who loves a doll much found a way against a rascal. In that journey, she solved problems and overcame obstacles using scientific concepts. The drama went so well. All the acts looked practiced much. Audiences really enjoyed 50 minutes performance.

After the lunch, the booths for hands-on activity were open. All activities were designed and adapted for the students with disabilities. During two hours, more than 80 students enjoyed various science experiments.

10 hands-on activities are open

These activities were managed by undergraduate students majoring physics education, chemistry education, biology education, and special education. They began to prepare this from last summer. After some trials and errors, they got accustomed to the experiments and found out optimal processes and conditions.

Our 10th science festival was finished. Yes, we've done it from 2006 and this was the 10th anniversary. All went well and everything was perfect including nice fall weather. We are now thinking of next 10 years. What will be happening next? What should we do for next steps?
